It seems to me that the 4th of July has sadly become “Fireworks and Beer Day” for far too many Americans. For instance where I am now in Hutchinson Kansas I had the privilege of listening to firecrackers for about a week before the 4th. All hours of the day and night from all over the neighborhood. Last year I was patrolling in Wichita Kansas on the fourth and I asked many of the people I dealt with what the true meaning of Independence Day was. Although I had expected some ignorance, I was truly shocked at how many young adults really had no clue. I asked questions such as “What is the declaration of independence?” or “Who was our first president?”
For the former I received answers ranging from “a court case” to “a book by Lincoln” and from my personal nomination for the Idiot of the Year award: That’s why they had to shoot Kennedy.”
The later resulted in a few correct answers and a few humorous ones as well.
I asked similar questions of some people here this year with similar results. Most younger kids simply answered that the 4th is when you get fireworks.
I suppose it is not really the kids fault. The liberal dominated education system does seem to teach much anymore, especially anything patriotic.
I decided to post the following video to give people a slightly better understanding of what we are celebrating and what the circumstances were at the time. I hope it gets through to a few people. Feel free to pass it along to others you think may enjoy it or benefit from it.
