Those in the studio were asked if a Muslim has the liberty to change his religion or not. The results were 76% no, 24% yes.
One guest on the show, Dr. Gamel Al-Bana, makes some very good points - although they were not well received by some of the others.
Apostasy is commonly defined as the rejection of Islam in word or deed by a person who has been a Muslim.
The four major Sunni and the one major Shia Madh’hab (schools of Islamic jurisprudence) agree that a sane adult male apostate must be executed.[1] They differ on the punishment for a female apostate - some schools calling for death and others for imprisonment. Whether Sharia laws governing apostasy are derived from the hadith traditions alone or also from the Qur’an is disputed. According to Wael Hallaq nothing of the apostasy law are derived from the Qur’an, although the jurist al-Shafi’i interpreted the Quranic verse [Qur'an 2:217] as providing the main evidence for apostasy being a capital crime in Islam.

Following are excerpts from a debate on secularism and Islamism in the Middle East with Syrian author Nidhal Na’isa and Egyptian cleric Sheik Ibrahim Al-Khouli, which aired on Al-Jazeera TV on October 30, 2007.
David Horowitz was one of the founders of the New Left in the 1960s and the editor of its most influential magazine, Ramparts. He is the author, with Peter Collier, of a number of bestselling dynastic biographies on the Rockefellers, the Kennedys, the Fords, and the Roosevelts. With Collier he also wrote Destructive Generation (1989), a chronicle of their break with the 1960s Left, that has been compared to Whittaker Chambers’ Witness and other classic works documenting a break from totalitarianism.
Among Horowitz’s more recent books are: Radical Son (1996), a memoir tracing his odyssey from “red-diaper baby” to conservative activist that George Gilder described as “the first great autobiography of his generation”; Uncivil Wars (2002), which chronicles his crusade against intolerance and racial McCarthyism on college campuses; Left Illusions (2003), a one-volume course on the history of our time from the Cold War to the war on terror; Unholy Alliance (2004), which examines the pact between radical Islam and the American Left; and The Professors: the 101 Most Dangerous Academics in America (2006), which reveals a shocking and perverse culture of academics who are poisoning the minds of today’s college students. Horowitz is also the author of The Politics of Bad Faith, How to Beat the Democrats, and The Art of Political War. “You will invade the Arabian Peninsula and Allah will grant it (to you). Then (you will conquer) Persia and Allah will grant it (to you). Then, you will invade Ar-Rum and Allah will grant it (to you). Then, you will invade The Dajjal and Allah will grant him (to you).” Nafi’ said to Jabir, “O Jabir! We do not believe that the Dajjal will appear until Ar-Rum is conquered.” [Ibid., no. 2028]
The land of Ar-Rum is Europe and Rome is its heart. The Messenger of Allah gave us the good tidings that we will conquer Rome, the capital of Christendom today, after the Muslims conquered the first capital of Christendom, Constantinople.
Imam Ahmad narrated that Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-Aas said, “While we were around the Messenger of Allah) writing (the Hadith) the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam was asked ‘Which of these two cities will be conquered first, Constantinople or Romiyah (Rome)?’ He said, ‘The city of Heraclius will first be conquered.’ He meant Constantinople.” [Al-Hakim, Al-Mustadrak, vol. 4, p. 508. The Islamic groups around the world should consider hiring a good public relation firm if they really expect people to believe the whole “Religion of Peace” thing.
